It’s 2018 and right away, the awards season had begun. And first up was the Golden Globes, a movie and television award show voted on by The Academy. If anyone has been watching the news in the past few months, Hollywood has been taking major hits, not all of Hollywood but the perverted men who do business within the field. Men caught for crimes such as child pornography and sexual assault include Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Jeffrey Tambor, and the list just keeps going. From writers to producers to actors, the lowlifes living amongst A-listers are unable to hide anymore, this being a point made by those who attended the award show on Sunday, Jan 7.

One of the first things highlighted at the event was everyone was expected to wear black to show respect towards the anti-sexual harassment movement, now titled “Time’s Up”. Now there is no problem with this at all, but the problem lies deeper than the color of clothing one must wear to an award show. And also, the color chosen was black, which is only the most popular color worn by men at these shows. A point made online was that a brighter contrast could’ve been chosen, such as pink.

Now walking into the Golden Globes, we all knew that Seth Meyers would be the host, and he truly delivered. Bash after bash was made against the disgusting men of Hollywood.

Harvey Weinstein isn’t here tonight. Because, well, I’ve heard rumors that he’s crazy and difficult to work with. But don’t worry, he’ll be back in 20 years when he becomes the first person ever booed during the “In Memoriam”.” Meyers has said.

He went from talking about Oprah possibly running for president, to gender equality issues, and still not letting up on his jokes that truly hit the gross men in Hollywood hard. Some have said that the comments were insensitive to victims and to the situation as a whole, but some of those things needed to be said. Audiences really appealed more to Meyers’ approach because it casted a brighter light to the situation.

This year saw winners such as James Franco, actor in The Disaster Artist, Ladybird, winning best comedy picture, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, winning best drama picture, The Handmaid’s Tale, winning best drama TV series, This Is Me, winning best original song from The Greatest Showman, Guillermo Del Torro, winning best director for The Shape of Water, and Coco, winning best animated film. But going back to a specific category, best director. Out of the five nominees, not a single woman stood among them. With female directors like Ladybird’s Greta Gerwig and Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins, a lot of people questioned how it was even possible for such decision to be made, but they, and definitely I, were also not that surprised.

And going back to one of the topics, about Oprah Winfrey running for president, it’s been covered on a ton of news stations and even brought up in President Trump’s meetings. Everyone is asking the question, “would she run for president?”. She was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award for here groundbreaking roles and the influence she has in Hollywood. Winfrey delivered a powerful speech, reflecting on her past and her accomplishments, while speaking out against common problems and addressing to the young girls watching. I can see why people would want her to take on the role of president, she likely has the capability to do so. And it’s a great and highly possible concept, being that anyone could run for president now. She has told fans in the past that she would never go through with being president but her friends and her partner have both said she is now intrigued by the idea.

The Golden Globes, like any other award show, was known less for the winners but more for the other events that had taken place. Luckily some of those other events happened to spark a more in depth conversation about the Hollywood industry, and the abusers who run it.
