Insidious: The Last Key

Earlier this Jan., the fourth new Insidious movie came out. This movie was linked to the others and gave background on the psychic, Elise Rainer, that has helped families in the movies. Since Jan. 5, Insidious: The Last Key made over 145 million dollars and is still in theaters now.
The movie began showing a young girl and boy in a room that kept on hearing and seeing very creepy things. Elise’s brother, Christian, was given a whistle that their mom told them to use whenever they felt in danger and she would always come find them. Right as Christian was going to grab it to use it, it was nowhere to be found so he was left in the room with Elise, terrified. The parents of the children come into the room asking what’s going on and when the daughter explains to her father what she saw, he tells her to tell him that she doesn’t see anything but she refuses to lie. This angers her dad because he didn’t want his child seeing ghosts so he decides to beat her because he thought that would teach her to stop seeing things or at least to lie to him about what she saw. After hitting her until she was screaming, Elise’s father, Gerald, forces her into the dark and eerie basement.
Once she walks down the stairs, she hears a voice telling her to help them open all the doors. The doors that the voice is referring to is the doors where her father kept the people on death row that he would execute. Elise listens to the voice and grabs a key that she is guided to grab. From there, a demon unlocks the door and takes over Elise. Her mother comes downstairs to check on her and when she gets down there, she is strangled to death. Elise’s father becomes furious with her and treats her worse because of what happened to her mother.
Fast forward to years later, and Elise gets a call from a man that tells her about all the horrible things that have been going at his home. When she asks him for his address, she learns that he lives at the same house that she grew up in which instantly makes her say no to helping him deal with the spirits there. Soon after turning down the begging of Ted Garza, the man who lives in her old house, she talks to the two people she works with and they manage to convince her to do it. She tells them that she has to do it on her own but the day she leaves, they show up with a huge van and tell her they are going with.
Once they arrive to the house, Elise tells them that she plans on sleeping inside and they can sleep in the van and monitor her to make sure nothing weird happens. Elise goes through the house and finds that her old room is blocked off with piles of books and quite a few bibles and when she looks at Ted, he tells her that it’s the most haunted room in the house. Soon after, Elise decides to go into the room to see if anything peculiar is in there; she finds the whistle that her brother was sure he lost all those years ago. In the room, a female ghost appears but only her co-workers, Tucker and Specs, can see the spirit. The ghost takes the whistle from Elise and says “help her” before vanishing. When the next day comes, the three of them venture out to a diner where Elise said as kids her and her family went. Soon after arriving, Elise talks to two girls and tells them that they look like someone she used to know. Elise’s brother, Christian, walks in and tells his girls that they need to leave immediately. Elise hands a picture she took of the whistle to one of Christians daughters and tells her to give it to him.
When they get back to the house, Elise spends the night searching for the whistle that the ghost took from her. She hears the whistle and follows it into the basement with Tucker. They soon realize that the whistle is coming from behind the door she opened all those years ago. After finding the key to open the door, Elise and Tucker are shocked to find a bloodied woman tied up to a chain. They try to help the woman because they realize that she isn’t a ghost but before they can help save her, Ted comes downstairs and tells them that they shouldn’t have opened the door. He locks the door and hears footsteps from upstairs and know that it’s Specs. Ted goes upstairs with a gun and plans to kill Specs but before Ted finds Specs, Specs manages to throw Ted off his tracks and pushes a bookshelf that falls on Ted and ends up killing him.
The police come to the house after a call was made and they are all questioned about what happened. The house is tied off with investigation tape and soon after, Christian and his two daughters go into the house to try to find the whistle. After Elise is questioned, she realizes that something is wrong and something bad is happening to Christians daughter Melissa. Back at the house, Melissa decides to go into the basement and is thrown on the ground by a very disturbing figure. Key Face, the distorted figure, begins crawling towards Melissa and sticks the key in her throat taking away her voice and into her heart taking her soul. Elise gets to the house and asks Christian where Melissa is and when they find her on the basement floor, they immediately call for help. Christian tells Elise to stay behind and when his other daughter, Imogen, hears this, she tells her dad that she needs to stay behind too.
The group plans to save Melissa before it’s too late and decide to split up. Specs and Imogen search for a bible while Elise and Tuck go back into the basement and come to find something inside he vent in the basement. Elise proceeds to crawl inside and finds piles of old luggage each with a skull and other small belongings. Elise’s physical body is then left by Key Face while her soul is taken into a spirit realm she calls “the further”. Tucker explains to Specs and Imogen than someone needs to go into the further to save Elise and Melissa and Imogen tells them that she can do. Soon after being put into a trance, Imogen finds herself in the further and searches for the girls very quickly because Key Face plans to take their souls from them forever. In the further l, Elise sees her dad and realizes that things aren’t what they seem and that Key Face has made every person that’s lived in the house a slave to its demands. The three of them try fighting off Key Face but can’t manage; the whistle is tossed to Elise and once she blows it, her mother’s soul appears and saves them. This encounter allows for Elise to say one last goodbye to her mom before returning back to the physical world.

The movie ends on a positive note, while finding a way to connect all the previous movies in a short period of time. By the end, the audience comes to realize that Elise is no longer the only one in the family with a gift. Unlike all the other Insidious movies, this one leaves no questions unanswered and ties up all the plots in a manner that allows the audience hoping for even more.
