The NYFW Fight Between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj

As you may have heard in Migos’ song featuring Nicki Minaj and Cardi B (ironic isn’t it) “Cardi B im back  b*tches,” Cardi B has definitely been in the media lately along with Nicki Minaj. Over the past couple of weeks you may have heard the buzz around about the two mainstream female rappers who recently got into a fight. The fight was mostly confrontation and was stopped before hands were thrown. But in this case Cardi’s shoe was.

During the annual New York Fashion Week, Sept 6 – Sept 14, a fight outbroke between Onika Maraj and Belcalis Almanzar or as they go by their stage names, Nicki Minaj, and Cardi B on Sept 7th. The heated argument took place at Harper Bazaar Icons party late Friday at the Plaza Hotel. A video of the two rappers was captured by other guests at the social gathering. In the video you can see Cardi B being held back by security guards, in which one of them elbowed her in the face. You can see it as Cardi B gets escorted out, along with another female who was also shouting things at Minaj. An eyewitness told Associated Press that Minaj was finishing up a conversation with someone when Cardi B tried to confront her. But Minaj’s security guards interfered before it got out of hand. In the video you can hear Cardi B saying “Come here” and Minaj say “I’m staying right here” behind her security guards.

“That stuff that Nicki was talking about Cardi B being a bad mother was low of her, keep her baby out of it. Cardi had the right to defend her kid, any mother would do that. However, starting the fight at the party was probably too much and throwing the shoe was a bit childish, but I can see where she’s coming from. Some say Nicki is the female queen of rap but she’s been top for quite sometime she needs to step aside, it’s time for Cardi to take the throne and she’s winning it fair and square. She’s worked her butt off since then and she deserves to be where she is now,” said Diana Cruz (‘19).

Minaj and Cardi have been at it since Cardi started to become popular over the course of the year. Cardi’s success mostly came from her hit song “Bodak Yellow” which was released in 2017. Fans have also been comparing them because they are both female rappers and Nicki Minaj is known as “the queen of rap” so when another rapper who is just as good as Nicki came into the picture, fans nor Nicki liked it; for as she has to stay on her throne and defend it. For example when Iggy Azalea, an Australian rapper came into the media in 2014 fans were quick to compare both young ladies. Back then, Azalea was really poppin’ on the charts when she came out with “Fancy” with Charlie XCX. But recently, she just isn’t as trendy as she used to be. It seems as whenever a rapper who’s a female there seems to be competition around her.  The tension between Minaj and Cardi being so thick, you could cut it whenever they are associated with one another.

After the fight, a couple days later Minaj went on her Queen radio show and expressed her thoughts on the situation. She said the fight was “mortifying and humiliating,” and continued on to defend herself and let her thoughts out about the confrontation.

“It was so unnecessary for Nicki to like that comment about Cardi and she showed Nicki she wasn’t gonna have anyone talk about her or her family,” said Mariana Cardoso (‘19).

But the internet was also speedy Gonzalez to make memes and reenact the fight video because it’s what the people on the internet are best at. But Cardi also had a laugh about the situation too on her Instagram. She made fun of herself by comparing her photo of her getting escorted out with one shoe on and her Dolce & Gabbana red dress to a painting called “Resurrection of Christ” by Dieric Bouts, which was painted in in 1455, and looks almost identical to the photo of Cardi.
