Girls Cross Country Season Starts

The Girl’s Cross Country team has started a great season.

On Monday, September 24, the girls competed at the Rock River Run meet in Sterling. North placed second after Hononegah.

The team also placed fifth at the Minooka meet. Every other meet the team has competed in, the team has placed first. The team placed first at the Crystal Lake South Invite and the NIC-10 Preview, on September 1st and 4th respectively.

The team’s varsity runners currently include Caitlin Corso (‘20), Madison Diercks (‘20), Sydnie Elder (‘21), Natalie Horgan (‘21), Katie Luna (‘20), Grace McCutcheon (‘21), Kayla McGuire (‘20), Chelsey Recendez (‘19) Alexandria Reza (‘20), Gianna Sagona (‘20), and Olivia Zaluckyj (‘20) according to the team’s 8to18 page.

The team’s conference meet is coming up in the next few weeks. Last year, the team won their conference but also won regionals, earning their sixth straight title. Six runners were granted All-conference honors as well.

“The team is really fun, it’s a big draw for a lot of people joining it. Everyone is super inclusive and the team always hangs out together. Sometimes, we have team bonding like pasta parties before meets or getting food after,” says Diercks (‘20). “But, we do work really hard to prepare for meets. Practices, especially on Mondays and Tuesdays, are tough.”

For the past three years, the team has brought home a state trophy. Last year, the team placed second, and the year before the team placed first. Coach Husser was also recognized as IHSA Coach of the Year during the past season.

Next week, the team will be competing at the St. Charles meet. Make sure to wish the team luck!
