Girl’s Basketball Racing for Sectionals Appearance

The Belvidere North Girls basketball team is putting up a big fight this season as they are fighting to win this week’s regional championship game. If they can put in all of their strength and might they have, the girls might be able to pull it off.

This season has been one for the books. The outstanding team lead by seniors Madison Dierks, Samantha Allen, Katie Luna, Anna Hulstedt, Paige Lambright, and Jocelyn Callahan, has been very successful these past couple of months. The team has had quite the season with a record of 23-9. This week’s goal is to up that to 24-9.

North beat Freeport 60-32 on February 17 to advance to the regional championship game where they will be taking on the Boylan Titans. The season has had some high stakes with lots of pressures and stress on the girls. They handled everything well and kept pushing as hard as they can to bring home a win this week. As they are working towards their regional title, they are trying their hardest to push out one of their biggest competitors. Boylan gave them some trouble before this season as the Blue Thunder had a close call against the Titans earlier this year. Boylan also beat North a week ago by 12 points.

With the installation of new head coach Aaron Leonard, the girls have been getting used to working with him and understanding his basketball schemes. Thunder has not produced a regional title under the direction of Coach Leonard, so this perhaps could be a big milestone in his coaching career.

Samantha Allen (‘20) gave us some insight on the season. “After beating Boylan and Hononegah, two big competitors,  we were able to gain the confidence we needed to help us realize this team is something special! We have worked extremely hard, learning new plays to throw off the competition, as well as keeping our bodies at the top of their game for any team we face.”

With the team motto of “Climb the ladder,” these athletes are constantly working hard to push themselves to their breaking point to make themselves better and better every day. This season has been awesome to watch as their bond grows stronger and their drive never falls. This week’s game will be one tough matchup for sure, playing their biggest rivals, Boylan.  Game time is February 20 at 7:00 at Freeport High School. Come out to support your girl’s basketball team to show your Thunder pride.
