Everest Decision Time

Everest Decision Time

TJ McMillan, Reporter

My opinion on whether or not the glory of climbing Mount Everest is worth the risks that are involved is no. The reasons for this answer will be reviewed in this essay.

In my opinion, someone’s personal pride is not worth the sacrifice of their body. This is because I ask what is the point in doing something so dangerous when the reward is so low? Not to mention how costly this endeavor is in terms of money spent on gear.  I can understand the deep human urge to challenge oneself in order to prove to themselves or someone else that they have what it takes.  But again I find myself asking what is the point in trying to prove something when the very task itself could take you away from the people you love.?

I personally could not justify spending a large amount of money on the gear required for the climb and the guide just to have even the slightest chance of failure, let alone the thought of dying up on the mountain is just scary. This is not to say that those who have done it are “stupid” this is just to say that this extreme test of human physical ability can only be completed by those who have extreme courage, endurance, and the resolve to succeed under any circumstance even if that means a high likely hood of death.  Humans will likely always push themselves further and further in an effort to better themselves both physically and mentally, and what better way to strengthen the body and mind than to participate in challenges that test your fundamental human will to survive.
