We’ve had many famous figures die within the past year. Although they may be gone, we’ll remember them as their legacies continue to live on for many years to come. Here’s a look at some of the lives that we have tragically lost in 2016 and will continue to inspire us.

David Bowie, an English singer, songwriter, producer, and actor died at 69 on January 10, 2016 after fighting an 18 month battle with cancer. Bowie is considered one of the most influential musicians of his era, as his music remained innovative and influential to many different genres of music for over five decades. Bowie released 27 studio albums over the course of his lifetime and was a pioneer in glam rock. With 140 million in record sales, he is one of the world’s best selling music artists of all time.

 

Alan Rickman, an English director and actor died at 69 on January 14, 2016 due to pancreatic cancer. Although he has played in over 50 films, his performances in the Harry Potter and Die Hard series have gained him widespread attention and the love of many fans.

Prince, an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and actor died at age 57 on April 7, 2016. Prince was considered one of the best selling artists of all time and is considered one of the most influential artists of the rock and roll era. He has over 20 studio albums and has won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award for his performance in the film Purple Rain. Prince was also well known for his views on gender roles and identity and support for women in the music industry.

Merle Haggard, an American singer, songwriter and instrumentalist died at age 79 on April 6, 2016 after suffering double pneumonia. Over the course of his career, he won numerous awards from the Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music, National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He also accepted a Kennedy Center Honor for his contribution to American culture. Haggard has been a major influence to countless modern country artists.

Although we have lost these inspiring celebrities and more this year, we will always remember them for the accomplishments they have made and how they will continue to influence out culture and society.
