Belvidere North’s girls cross country team has returned from a summer of training to compete in their first meet of the season. The meet took place on Aug. 30 at the Sycamore Invite at Afton Forest Preserve. The girls took first place at both the junior varsity and varsity levels.

During the three mile varsity race, Jenna Lutzow (‘17) finished in first place with a time of 19:44.4. Shortly behind Lutzow in third place was Gianna Sagona (‘20). Sagona had a time of 20:28.1.

“ I’m very excited for the rest of the season. After the first race, I’m really looking forward to seeing how the rest of it plays out,” said Sagona.

During the junior varsity race, Katie Luna (‘20) took the first place spot for Belvidere North. She finished the 2.4 mile race with a time of 16:08.8. The top twenty for junior varsity also included Natalia Rudawski (‘19), Bonnie Konopka (‘19) and Anna Hulstedt (‘20).

“ For the first race of the season, I think we did very well. I am very proud of my team,” said Konopka.

Saturday, Sept. 3 is the team’s next meet at the Crystal Lake Invitational. Coach Ken Husser and the entire team is confident that they will do well at it. The team’s goal is to win almost all of their invitationals before making it to state this year.

“You can expect to see us coming out as a pretty competitive team this year and we’ll be going for a lot of first places and high titles,” said Lutzow.
