IMDB (The Internet Movie Database) is a website that tracks films that are released as well as any upcoming films. There are more than 1.7 million films and TV shows that are listed on the site.

IMDB normally provides users with everything related to the movies or TV shows, such as ratings, summaries, trailers, cast and crew, etc.

The site displays ratings out of 10, and as of November 28, there are only three films with a rating of 9.0 or higher. These three films are on IMDB’s “Top Rated Movies” catalogue and are widely known. The remaining seven movies in the top ten list are also near the 9.0 mark with the tenth film “Fight Club” reaching a rating status of 8.8/10.

The top ten list are all well-known, highly praised films and each have their own reasons for being critically acclaimed films.

Starting at the bottom of the list,  “Fight Club” (1999) is appealing to many viewers due to the theme of escaping a seemingly pointless life. The protagonist goes from having a normal office job to having an exciting life, which is what many people desire.

Right after “Fight Club” is “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” starring Clint Eastwood and is considered a classic western film. The soundtrack and screenplay are high points of the movie and is most likely why the film has the score it does. The soundtrack’s theme tune in particular has become a classic western song.

In eighth place is the popular fantasy franchise, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”. This film is the final part in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and is an adaptation of Tolkien’s book series. The Lord of the Rings is one of the most popular fantasy series. The books’ success played an important part in providing the film with high ratings.

“Pulp Fiction” takes seventh place and is known for being a visceral film, and resonating with audiences.

The adaptation of a German man’s life takes sixth place. “Schindler’s List” allows people to experience the horrors that the holocaust caused. Oskar Schindler, ran a factory in which he had to protect his Jewish workforce from Nazi persecution. The harsh reality that the film shows cements it’s place as a great movie.

“12 Angry Men” has flown under the radar for many, but is a critically acclaimed film, due to the movie taking on social issues we would find in our world.

“The Dark Knight” reached 4th place and is known for having an impressive plot, and amazing cinematography. The Batman franchise also allowed the movie a boost in ratings.

“The Godfather” and “The Godfather: Part II” take 2nd and 3rd place respectively. The films are praised for their dark, dramatic plot as well as their cinematography. The two films are shot in dark, saturated ways which is an extremely unique take on filming a movie.

“The Shawshank Redemption” boasts 1st place, with a rating of 9.2. “The Shawshank Redemption” is a mesmerizing movie with a great lesson. It teaches people to value their freedom and how to have people pick themselves up at their lowest. The overall plot is said to be a huge reason that “The Shawshank Redemption” is as successful as it is.
