If you’ve paid any attention to entertainment news, odds are you’ve heard of the movie that seems to be grabbing at 14 Academy Award nominations, plus 7 more nominations and wins at The Golden Globes. Some people don’t understand the hype that is the musical film, La La land, or why it might break the record for the most Oscars received. The film is surprisingly exciting with modern, jazz music and a romantic plot between the two main characters, Sebastian and Mia, played by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The two actors proved they could play any type of character by singing through the movie and dramatically acting to match the personality of two aspiring performers. Mia starts off as a barista on a Warner Brother’s lot who had multiple auditions on the side. She then meets piano player and jazz enthusiast Sebastian and they seem to immediately fall in love. Both of the characters have big goals in Hollywood, with Mia wanting to follow in her famous aunt’s footsteps and Sebastian wanting to open his own jazz club.

The music deserves multiple awards itself for Gosling and Stone proved to be talented singers while bringing to life “City of Stars” and “The Fools Who Dream”, which were nominated for Best Original Songs. The romance between the two characters starts quite quickly but eventually starts to fade as Sebastian goes on tour with a jazz band and Mia stays back at home to compose her own one-woman show. One seems to be more successful which causes more trouble between the two. The ending is very important to the uniqueness of the film, jumping to five years later and the two seem to be in the same place, with Sebastian catching Mia’s eye once more, playing the song he first played when they met. I do not want to spoil anything more but the ending is something that most movie-goers had not seen before.

Some people do not feel they should give the film a chance because a musical is not their style of film, but La La Land delivers a different idea that mixes elements of old movies with present ones. And with the music being so catchy, it will probably get stuck in your head and you will probably be whistling “City of Stars” in your sleep. The movie is up for a record-breaking number of 14 Oscar nominations so viewers will see if La La Land takes home the most gold in categories including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, and more.
