The academy awards are coming up this weekend, and has movie lovers all around buzzing.  This years event will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, after being hosted by Chris Rock last year.  Every year there seems to be one particular movie that takes home seemingly every award that it is nominated for.  Last year that movie was The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.  This movie won DiCaprio his first Oscar for Best Actor in his successful career, one that many believed to be overdue.  The movie was directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, who won best director as well.

The movie this year that  is predicted to take home all of the awards is supposed to be La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.  It is the frontrunner to win Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Original Music.

“I absolutely loved La La Land,” said Ellyn Boatman(17’) “It was such a great movie, it was a great mix of a thrilling love story and a great musical.  I’m hoping that it wins every award that it is put up for, its one of my favorite movies ever.”

Not everyone is rooting for La La Land to make a clean sweep of the awards, and wants to see another movie take home some hardware.

“Hacksaw Ridge was a very out of the ordinary movie because of the events that took place,” said Cameron Schuring(‘17) “It is an inspiring story for those who want to serve, and I really hope that it wins an award.”

There are many categories that not too many people know about, or care about as much as the main ones, such as Best Animated Short Film, Best Live Action Short Film, Best Documentary, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Documentary.

While there are frontrunners in many categories, everyone will be watching hoping for an upset.   Everyone wants to see another movie win an award, so it isn’t completely dominated by just one movie.

“Every year I hope that a movie that nobody has ever heard about wins,” said Boatman “It definitely makes the awards much more exciting to watch.”

This years Oscars is expected to be an exciting award ceremony, and has the movie community anticipating this weekend.
