Imagine waking up one morning, doing your usual routine, hanging out with friends and partying by the end of the night. Now imagine right before the night it over, your car crashes. But instead of waking up in a hospital or accepting your tragic fate, you wake up to find yourself in your bed ready to start that day over again. This happened to Sam Kingston, played by Zoey Deutch, in the movie Before I Fall which was released to theaters on March 12.

The movie starts off with Sam waking up to a text from her best friend Lindsay saying “happy cupid day”, which is technically Valentine’s day. Sam goes to school where she receives roses, a tradition at her school, and notices one she had gotten that was quite strange. Later in the day the characters Juliet is introduced, she is the outcast in school, and like in most high school girl movies, she is made fun of. After school, the small group of friends meets up to get ready for a party and there is a lot of discussion between Sam’s relationship with Rob, her boyfriend. When they get to the party, it is clear that Rob is not a very good boyfriend towards Sam and blows her off more than once. Sam is admired by Kent, whom she had been friends with before ignoring him and treating him poorly in high school. Just when that night seemed to wind down, Juliet reappears to make a statement against Lindsay, Sam and her friends. After Juliet is verbally abused and gets water dumped all over her, she escapes into the woods, leaving behind a lot of confused partiers. The next part is when the main plot comes in; the girls all leave the party and are hit by a large truck. But Sam wakes up, in her bed, on cupid day.

The rest of the movie consists of viewers following Sam around as she tries to figure out how to break the loop she is in. Even when she doesn’t go to the party, she still wakes up in time to live the same day. Nothing seems to work for her until one day she makes a decision. After she spends time with her little sister, tells her friends and Kent how she feels about them and talks to Juliet, she faces her true fate.

Before I Fall, originally a book by Lauren Oliver, is being labeled as the teenage Groundhog Day, featuring the same type of do over plot. The movie gave viewers a different look at life, almost like a ‘what would you do on your last day?’. Before I Fall really makes you think and maybe even cry.
