DECA is a program in our school run by Belvidere North’s business teacher, Mr. Jared Young. This program is for students to learn more about marketing, management and entrepreneurship.

Last year, DECA took 35 students and two chaperones to Indianapolis for a regional leadership conference.

At this leadership conference the students attended various seminars on things like leadership, networking, marketing, business skills and how to prepare for job interviews. As well as giving scholarships of $300,000.

Some of the people that went on this trip included: Kaylee Bowman (‘20), Leah Hoffman (‘18), Matt Belinson (‘18), Jack Macaluso (‘18), Ben Clanin, Michael Gill (‘18), Dain Kuss (‘18), Jackson Rambolt, Tyler Paddock (‘18), and Lily Bakulski(‘20).

“I think it was a really good experience. We had a lot of students grow their skills and get really excited for the other half of the year,” said Mr. Young.

Last year, Allie Hammer (‘19), Chris Winters (‘18) and Andrea Slintak (‘19) qualified for nationals, held in Anaheim, California. Winters took second at State and competed at the Internationals, Hammer and Slintak both made top 16 in the nation by winning the Central Region. Since none of the competitors made it into the top ten, it is unknown what place they finished in.

Hoffman last year was elected DECA Inc. Central Region Vice President of the High School Division. This means that she represents the Central Region and helps to increase the student involvement in the organization. Last year, as chapter President, Hoffman increased her chapter’s membership by 50%.

“I’m super excited to represent around 100,000 students from all across the Midwest. I couldn’t have asked for a better team or a better experience in DECA,” said Hoffman.

This year, North’s DECA program will be attending a couple of leadership conferences, like the one they attended in Indianapolis. These conferences will be held in the fall and in the winter. This year’s winter conference will be held in Omaha, Nebraska. The fall leadership conference is an all-day event on September 21, 2017, and the winter leadership conference is a three-day event held December 1-3, 2017.

January 26, 2018, North’s DECA chapter will compete in the DECA West Suburban Sectionals competition. Those that qualify will compete February 22-24, 2018, at the IL DECA State Career Development Conference “State” and compete against 1300-1500 of the state’s top business students from Illinois.

Any students that qualified, are eligible to attend the DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, where they will have the opportunity to compete against 20,000 students from all over the world.
