Competitive Cheer
October 27, 2017
Winter sports are starting up, and one of the biggest sports of the winter season is competitive cheer. The cheer team had tryouts Monday October 23 and Tuesday October 24. They still haven’t finished cheering on at the football games, since the football team made playoffs. No time can be wasted when it comes to competition, so they started their competition season up.
Football season is not as strict or stressful as competition season for the cheerleaders. During the fall season, the team puts in a lot of work, but they are there more to cheer for the football team and to hype up the crowd. The winter season is their own deal. They still cheer at the basketball games, but the main focus is their competitions. They travel all over the local area and compete at various competitions, trying to earn a spot at the state competition in February. Here is a list of all their upcoming competitions:
Sunday Dec. 3rd Crystal Lake Central
Friday, Dec. 15th Coed Challenge
Sat., Dec. 16th Rolling Meadows
Saturday, Jan 6th Belvidere
Sunday, Jan 7th Buffalo Grove
Saturday, Jan. 13th Grayslake North
Thurs., Jan 18th Conference
Saturday, Jan 27th IHSA SECTIONALS
Feb. 2nd/3rd IHSA State
Last year the team had a successful season. They claimed the state champion title at the competition down in Bloomington, IL. Also, the year before they were the state runner-ups.
Olivia Sawyer (‘18) said, “Being the reigning state champions has put a lot of pressure for this season, I know my team can overcome it though. Our goal for this season is to put in a ton of work to keep that title. We need to stay hungry and humble.”
We wish the team the best of luck this season, and remember that any support helps. Come see their second performance of the year on December 15, at the Coed Challenge, which is held here at North.
