Football Playoffs Week 1

Matt, Belinson

Even though the winter temperatures and sports are rolling in, one fall sport is hoping to play deep into November and the history books.

Belvidere North football began its season on August 28, and is now in the second round of the IHSA playoffs. North made a run into the playoffs by winning out in their last four regular season games. North was placed in a matchup against NIC-10 opponent, Auburn, in the first round of the playoffs. Belvidere North players felt a first round bout against a conference foe would be beneficial to them as a whole.

¨We did lose last time, but think about it, we didn’t have six key players and only lost by one touchdown,¨ said Chance Cregeen (´18). ¨We know what they do well and we will have the upper hand, we have nothing to lose, they are the higher seed and are playing in front of their home crowd,¨ said Cregeen (´18).

Cregeen (´18), and the other members of the defense went to Auburn on October 27 to play the first playoff matchup of the year. North came ready to play.

North stopped the Knights on three straight drives and were  able to take advantage of a fumble coughed up by the Auburn running back. Quarterback Callahan Diercks, threw his first playoff touchdown ever, connecting with tight end, Kenny Epperson on a go-route across the middle. Epperson out ran his defender and got the first points of the night for North. The offense was not done.

Cruz Garza (´18) will be the workhorse for the offense after Mason Stringini went down with a torn fibula in the last regular season game. Garza ran for over 100 yards and busted out a 50 yard rush and a touchdown later in the drive.

¨We need him to perform every game, and he always does,¨ said Callahan Diercks (´18).

North won the game 20-7 to move on in the playoffs. North plays Great Lakes North on Saturday, November 4 at Great Lakes North. The game will be in the early afternoon at 4 pm. Belvidere North will be providing a fan bus for students to take to the game if they don’t want to drive. Their will be two busses and each need at least 30 signups for North to provide them. The bus will leave around 2 pm.

Good luck to the team on Saturday and ¨Ring the Bell¨!
