On Monday night, Timothy Heller, a former close friend of the popular singer Melanie Martinez confessed to being sexually assaulted by her. Following the allegations, fans of Martinez began tweeting the hashtag ‘MelanieMartinezIsOverParty’ and some even threw out merchandise they once purchased from the singer’s website. Martinez posted her side of the story later that night which has caused even more outrage from fans.

Heller explained in vivid detail the events that took place over the course of a few days when she was staying at Martinez’s house. In Martinez’ statement which she posted on Twitter, she claimed Heller never “said no” and that they made the choice together, which isn’t what Heller claimed happened. Heller explained that she was in a relationship at the time and didn’t feel comfortable doing anything with Martinez. She went on and stated that her and Martinez got high on marijuana. She hoped this would calm and ease her but it only made things worse.

From there, Martinez began making even more advances towards Heller and begged her to let her touch Heller. Heller says that at first, she didn’t really say anything while Martinez touched her because she was in shock but then told her not to but Martinez went ahead anyways. Towards the end of Heller’s statement she points out that she told Martinez ‘no’ for two nights straight. She then goes on at explains that females can assault other females or any other gender and also that friends can do this to friends.

“Some people don’t think females can assault anybody and that shows how unfair things are sometimes. Melanie Martinez should be treated the same way men have who have been accused of doing horrible things to others are treated,” said Kayla Polo(18’).

The part of Martinez’ statement where she claims Heller never “said no” is what really upset fans. A lot of fans began posting various examples of actions or statements that are intended to be taken as a no such as: ‘I’m tired’, ‘I don’t know how I feel about doing this’, or simply pulling away, shoving someone off, or remaining silent after being repeatedly asked if they want to do something. There are still fans that support Martinez after her being accused of sexual assault. Many of Martinez’ ex-fans criticize these people because 9/10 times they will attack males for being accused of sexual assault but when it’s a woman or their favorite artist, they give them a free pass.

“I think it’s beyond disgusting that people still want to support a person that did something so wrong to their best friend,” said Priscila Chavez(19’).

Martinez hasn’t released any other statements beside the one from twitter that received backlash. There is no information on whether Martinez will be pressed with charges or if her record label will drop her. The response Heller has received from ex-fans of Martinez in regards to her story is one of overwhelming love and support rather than one of hate and doubt.
