Conference Cheer Competition

On Thursday, January 18, the Belvidere North Varsity cheer team traveled  to Harlem High School for the Nic-10 conference competition. The team competed at 7:18 pm, which was right in the middle of the competition. Belvidere North has won this competition for six years in a row. The team ended up winning and earned a 7-peat this year. In the Nic-10 Hononegah got second and Harlem got third. Then for the Big Northern Conference, Rockford Lutheran earned their second conference championship.

The competition is combined with the Big Northern Conference so both conferences compete the same night. The teams in the Nic-10 are East, Hononegah, Jefferson, Boylan, Belvidere, Guilford, and Harlem. The teams in the Big Northern are Genoa Kingston, Oregon, North Boone, Rockford Lutheran, Rockford Christian, Stillman Valley, and Byron. The two conferences don’t go against each other, but they compete the same night.

Mya Carlton (‘19) said, “This was my first year going to conference, and I was very excited. It was cool that all the local teams competed against each other since normally we are not competitors. We had been working hard all week to make sure that we earned the 7-peat Conference title and keep the streak up.”

Now that conference is over, it is time for the team to prepare for sectionals. Sectionals this year are held here at North, and the team has to place top five in order for them to advance to the state competition in Bloomington on February 2.
