As of 2005, Angela Dorothea Kasner became the first female chancellor of Germany; the first female candidate to run for the position.  Today, 18 years of engaging in European politics, Merkel announced to the German public she will not be re-electing for Chancellor in 2021.

According to Angela Merkel, governing Germany is a “Very challenging and fulfilling task.” A German Chancellor has the power to ratify laws and power to suspend the German Bundestag.

Thus far, Merkel is in her fourth elected term as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Over the years, Merkel has controlled the long-term recession in Germany and established economic stimulus packages. Merkel is well-known for her extensive power in office which is of benefit with allying countries.

“It is time for me to start a new chapter,” said Merkel when interviewed by reporters. Christian Democratic Union or CDU is a liberal-conservative political party which never elect from the federal parliament. Angela Merkel is also an active chairman in the organization. Merkel has also announced she will be stepping down from her position.

“This means there will be less German involvement in key European debates, but also on global issues, the country is less likely to take a leading role,” said policy analyst Leopold Traugott.

Not only will Germany’s involvement with allied countries and economic status decrease, but Germany will in a greater term have no support from neighboring countries. With new candidates such as Anne Kramp-Karrenbauer who has become a recent successor to Merkel, Germany will have undergo policies and regulations with the next Chancellor. Karrenbauer is the minister-president of the federal state of Saarland back in 2011, which establishes a great sum of credibility for Kramp-Karrenbauer.

“It will be particularly painful for French president Emmanuel Macron, who was hoping for Merkel’s support in his plans for wide-reaching European reform. It seems even less likely he will receive this support from Berlin,” said Traugott.

Although three years are left in her term, Chancellor Angela Merkel will continue to contribute to the political, economic, and social status of the German Empire. Til 2021, Angela Merkel will and continue to be the most powerful ruler to have ran for a position of high-ranking status.
