Belvidere North’s scholastic bowl team has taken a big step forward this season. After being eliminated in the first round of the televised Bergstrom Stateline Quiz Bowl last season, the team has rebounded nicely by defeating Stillman Valley 260-150 and securing a win over Boylan by a score of 300-160. The win over Boylan guarantees a spot for Belvidere North at the 2019 High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT) held in Atlanta, Georgia. It’ll be the first time Belvidere North has qualified for the HSNCT since the 2015-2016 school year. The team will be looking to replicate past success at the national level in 2013-2014, where they tied for #13 in the nation. The team will face a lot of difficult competition at the national tournament, including more local schools like Belvidere and Auburn, and there’ll also be tougher teams from Illinois and around the country including Adlai E. Stevenson High School, IMSA, all five of Wayzata (MN) High School’s teams, and defending national champion Plano West Senior High School.

In conference play, Belvidere North has done pretty well. This season, the team tied for third in the conference with Guilford and Hononegah. They’ve also played well in non-conference tournaments, placing third at the David Riley Memorial Kickoff Tournament and placing second at the Turnabout tournament at Belvidere. The final conference tournament of the season is this Wednesday after being postponed twice due to weather. While rules prevent people from watching matches in person, parents aside, be sure to keep yourself updated for the rest of the season. It’s been a little while since this school has qualified for the national level at anything. It should be celebrated.
