Belvidere North Boys and Girls Basketball Fall in the Regionals

Belvidere North boys basketball was set to play their last two games of the regular season. They went to Genoa to play a rescheduled game from earlier this month. North started off strong as John Carlson(‘20) scored North’s first ten point of the game. North rode the momentum and they were up 19-7 at the end of the first quarter. It was more of the same for North as they continued to dominate the game on both ends of the floor. After Zach Reidenbach(‘20) nailed a three pointer at the halftime buzzer, North went into the break up 38-19. North kept feeding Carlson in the paint and he ended up with a game high 26 points. Both teams cleared their benches in the fourth quarter and North won 57-43.  

North’s final regular season game was at their cross town rivals, Belvidere. Both teams started off hitting shots and it was close for the majority of the first half. But after another Reidenbach buzzer beater, North was up 33-30 at halftime. North struggled to score in the second half, but they got enough stops to keep them in the game. Carlson kept North in the game with his 15 points. But with less than a minute left in the game, North was up two. Belvidere had the ball and they were able to make a shot to send the game to overtime. During overtime, North continued to get the defensive stops to keep them in the game. And with 30 seconds left in overtime, North was up by one, Josh Triplett(‘20) got a steal and North hit their free throws and eventually ended up winning 55-53.

North boys and girls basketball teams faced off against Boylan in the regionals. The boys played Boylan in the first round of the regionals. The game was close as both teams started off strong and North was down 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. During the second quarter, Boylan was able to make a couple of runs to stretch the lead to 25-18 at halftime. North started the second half with a strong run to cut the lead down to two. Anthony Espenson’s(‘20) 14 points kept North in the game through the second half. North was able to get stops on defense but they were unable to score enough when they needed to. After hitting free throws, Boylan eventually won 54-46 to advance to a second regional game.

North’s girls basketball also faced off against Boylan in the regionals. After North blew out Jefferson and got a good win against McHenry, it was time to take on the fifth ranked team in 4A for a regional championship. North had played Boylan close earlier in the year but they knew they would have to play their best game of the season. North was able to keep the game close in the first half, but they still found themselves down at halftime. In the second half, Boylan proved to be too much for North as they stretched the lead to 20 by the end of the game. Boylan was able to advance to a sectional game after a 61-41 win over North.
