Belvidere North’s girls track team traveled to Antioch on May 10 for sectionals. Those that qualified would travel to the state meet on May 17 and 18 at Eastern Illinois University.

The following advanced out of the Antioch Sectional to state: Gloria Oteng-Bediako (‘22) won the triple jump event with a jump of 38 feet and 1 inch. Brooke Messenger (‘19) cleared 5 feet 3 inches in high jump. She placed second. In pole vault, Kayla Hesano (‘21) placed fourth and reached a height of 10 feet 3 inches. Sarah Hulstedt (‘20) broke the 2011 outdoor school record in shot put, throwing 39 feet 7 inches. She took second place in her event.

The 4×8 team made up of Madison Diercks (‘20), Sydnie Elder (‘21), Caitlin Corso (‘20) and Anna Hulstedt (‘20) also qualified for state. They placed second with a time of 9:48.34. The four alternates Natalie Horgan (‘21), Katie Luna (‘20), Hunter Vinke (‘19), and Anna Sida (‘21) also went to state.

“Sectionals was really fun, the competition was tough. It was really cool to see the success of my teammates and see all of our hard work pay off,” said Diercks.

The last person to qualify for state was Haley Dahl (‘19) in the 300 hurdles. Dahl placed second with a time of 47.56.

The team as a whole placed third out of 17 teams at sectionals.

At state on May 17, Hesano, Messenger, S. Hulstedt, Oteng-Bediako, the relay team, and Dahl all advanced to the state qualifiers.

“I really enjoyed being able to have the opportunity to run in the state meet this year, it was an honor to run there and I am super excited for next season as well,” said A. Hulstedt.

On May 18, Hesano, S. Hulstedt, the relay team, and Dahl couldn’t make it out of preliminaries. This left Oteng-Bediako and Messenger in the state finals for North.

Oteng-Bediako finished third in triple jump with a jump of 39 feet. Messenger finished sixth in high jump reaching 5 feet 5 inches.
