The fear of leaving someone behind with nobody to care for them is a very real fear for  Lillian Parks. She is an 87-year-old woman who is being accused of killing her disabled adult grandson. She is accused of this out of the fear that no one would care for him after she’s gone. Her grandson’s name was Joel Parks. With his disabilities, Joel would spend the week in a group home then spend the weekend with his grandmother. Joel’s father is deceased and he didn’t have a good relationship with his mother.

His body was found by his sister around noon on Sunday. When police were at the scene Lillian would make subtle comments indicating that she had intentionally overdosed her own grandson out of the fear of her own health as his part-time caretaker. “You never know totaly what someone is thinking. In this case, I don’t know if she was thinking about the wellbeing of her grandson or if she was thinking about herself,” said Capt. Brian Thier of the Bradenton police department.

Right now she is being held in medical protective custody. She will be there until she is released by a doctor. As of right now, the charges against her are pending. The family of Lillian has not answered CNN’s request for comment. The police are still waiting for the toxicology report to determine what was given to Joel that made him die.
