The Effects of vaping

Bethany York

Vaping contains nicotine. Nicotine is highly addictive and can slow down brain development. It can affect memory, concentration, learning, self-control, attention and mood. Low doses may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and eye irritation. High doses of nicotine may cause tachycardia, high blood pressure, seizures, coma, and death.

FDA reported detecting ethylene glycol in some of the e-cigarettes and cancer causing substances called “nitrosamines” in others. Vapes have been linked to very harmful substances that can lead to lung disease including asthma. Vaping can also cause lung inflammation and chronic lung disease.

“An estimated number of 5.3 million teens have been reported using a vape,” says a new study.

E-cigarettes contain high levels of nicotine and because of these high nicotine levels, vaping is extremely addictive and teens are already more easily drawn to addiction than adults because their brains are still developing.  This makes them more likely  to use drugs and alcohol which is the main reason why so many teens even start to vape.

Nicotine reduces blood flow, which then affects your teeth and gums. In this way, vaping causes the death of gum tissues, which in turn causes gum recession. Severely receding gums lead to tooth sensitivity, increased risk of cavities and, in some cases loss of teeth. Studies showed that kids who vape are more likely to go on to smoke cigarettes. There have been close to 400 cases of severe lung disease from vaping, and at least six deaths due to e-cigarettes.

When you go without vaping, the nicotine level in your bloodstream drops, which may cause unpleasant feelings, physical symptoms, and strong urges to vape. These are all signs that you are addicted to vaping. However, even vaping without nicotine can be very harmful to your lungs.Vaping can do things like weaken your immune system and make your gag reflex sensitive. However, if you want to quit vaping and your symptoms of withdrawal will peak at around 1 to 3 days, they then decrease over 3-4 weeks. The symptoms of withdrawal from nicotine are usually all in your head. Juuls, vape pens, vaping mods, pod systems, are all different kinds of vapes, they all however contain nicotine.

Nicotine can also make you lose weight. It decreases your appetite so you hardly may want to eat anything. Vaping weakens the lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle between the esophagus and stomach that keeps stomach contents from flowing back into the esophagus. Nicotine also acts on the brain’s dopamine system, which plays a role in desire, pleasure, reward and impulse control. Many different scientists have tested nicotine on animals such as rats, the results that they found where nothing but bad. It affected their brains to lose memory and took away some of their good cognitive thinking. So just like with teens vaping, it can cause long term damage on the brain and can influence a teenagers life later on.We do not know all the effects of vaping on teenagers and this is all the more reason to stay away from it.
